Several PhD programs in cognate fields are offered on the University at Buffalo campus in which students can arrange to work with LIS faculty.

Other Features of SUNY Buffalo's MLS program:

-The MLS program prepares information professionals for a wide variety of careers.
-Students can specialize in librarianship, preparing for professional and management careers in:public libraries and community information services, school library media centers, academic, research libraries, and special libraries and information centers in government agencies, companies, including law firms, or non-profit organizations.
-Student can also specialize in other applications of knowledge organization and information management, such as information architecture, Web design, usability, databases, network administration
-These specializations prepare for careers in archives, film collections, museums, newspapers, television, or Web development companies or as chief information officer.
-Students can also create their own specialization by taking up to four courses from around the UB campus, for example in ontologies, linguistics, communication, archives, computer science, medical information, and bioinformatics.
-LIS offers a variety of ways for students to complete classes, both face-to-face classes on the University at Buffalo campus (day and evening) and in Rochester, NY (evening) and online courses, all at an affordable price.
-The LIS program does not stop at intellectual and technical excellence but prepares students to use their knowledge to provide equal service to all and to bridge opportunity gaps through information.
-An MLS degree from the Department of Library and Information Studies equips you with skills to become a vital part of the knowledge economy and to transform lives through information.
