Polio was epidemic in the United States starting in 1916 and lasting into the late 1950s. In 1955, the Salk vaccine became available, saving thousands of lives. Yet that same year, Wisconsin’s Fox River valley had more polio cases per capita than anywhere in the United States. Celebrated rural historian and author Jerry Apps was one of those polio cases. He was 12. In his most personal book, "Limping Through Life: A Farm Boy's Polio Memoir" (Hardcover: $22.95; ISBN: 978-0-87020-580-4), Apps reveals how the disease affected him physically and emotionally, profoundly influencing his education, military service, and family life and setting him on the path to becoming a professional writer.
