Company Profile
Bolton Library - Knitting the past and future together

The original 1901 library had been in operation for over a century without a single major renovation and the abundance of materials gained over the years led to a general lack of space for other traditional functions. Increased technology needs, such as internet access, and security measures also needed to be implemented.

Capitalizing upon the dichotomy of history and technology, program themes for each division relate back to the structures themselves. The cozy 2,000 sf original building houses reading spaces, meeting areas, and local historic materials. Programmed areas in the new 14,000 sf addition include circulation materials in fiction, nonfiction, young adults, and media, as well as a community room, technology spaces, administration area, quiet study areas, and a separate children’s area with a story and crafts room. Although the new addition is ten times the size of the original building, there was a strong desire to maintain the proportion of the historic library. The design for the addition is interconnected to the original through forms yet distinguished and functional. Several distinct styles were taken from the original structure and fused together, replicating materials to accurately reflect exterior themes.
